Students Are Saying...
"Kevin is a fantastic instructor who is extremely knowledgable, friendly and ready to answer any question. He combines classroom instruction with hands on experience while explaining the material in clear, easy to understand ways. I would strongly recommend this instructor."
"This was such an amazing class! It was so fun to take what we had learned in 101, Beyond the Basics, and the morning of instruction and put it to work with real models!! It was great hearing your ideas, talking with others in the group, and then experimenting with our own creativity! I felt like a professional photographer! So much fun!"
"Kevin has so much experience and great tips for every issue you could possibly think of. He doesn't only teach the theory, I could really tell that he actually DOES what he's talking about - these are real tips from a real photographer."
Good understanding of the basics of photography including setting exposure, the relationship between shutter speed and aperture. My Photography 101 Workshop is a good preparation for taking this class.
A Digital SLR (DSLR) or Mirrorless Camera that supports Manual exposure mode and has a "hot shoe" on top the camera.
You do not need to have any prior experience with studio lighting to take this class, nor do you even have to currently own studio lighting. In fact, you might want to take this class before buying studio lighting in order to get a better understanding of what you need for the type of studio photography you want to pursue.
Class Format
This workshop is presented at my photography studio in NW Austin.
I offer this class in two different formats a few times each year. It is offered as an evening or weekend class. As an evening class, it is done over three evenings. In the weekend format, this class is an all day workshop, 9am - 6pm.
This is a VERY "hands on" workshop. I provide the necessary instruction on how to use studio lighting and then you will be taking your own great photos of the provided models using my studio and lighting. It is a FUN class!
Don't worry if you have concerns about how to "pose" the models. This class is focused on lighting techniques. The models we use are experienced with posing without requiring much instruction, allowing you to focus on important lighting techniques!
Keep in Touch!
Once you have been a student of one of my classes, you are invited to future photographer social get-togethers at my studio (for free), such as our Potluck Slideshows. Also, as a former student, you are welcome to email me any time with any other photography questions.

Students Are Talking About the Studio Lighting Workshop
"Recently I took Kevin's Studio Lighting class and it was excellent! I learned so much about a facet of photography that I knew very little about, that was previously intimidating to me. The atmosphere for learning was very comfortable and relaxed." - Edward Pagliai
"It was a great class and I learned a lot about light. I loved the photo shoot today, especially the way you kept adding lights/moving things around, etc and had us take photos at each change - great practical application of what we learned."
"I loved this class!! It was so much fun. At first I was really nervous about working with models and understanding the lighting seemed intimidating. Kevin made it very comfortable and before I knew it I had forgotten to be nervous. Kevin explained and demonstrated how to use lighting in the studio in a way that was easy to understand. It is a great class for anyone who wants to learn how to use studio lighting." Alice M.
"Kevin, Thank you for the outstanding lesson you provided in your studio. With your engineering background you were able to methodically breakdown each step of the process, but did it in a way that was very organic, easy to understand and unintimidating. It was a priceless experience for me to see how each studio light affected the subject and to see how much control a good photographer can have with light. The lesson only got better as I watched you transform from a technical instructor to visual artist during the last 30 minutes of the lesson. It was like having two different instructors. I have a whole new respect for studio photography and can't wait to try some of the lessons at home. Now I have to clean out the garage to have a space to shoot!" - Jaime G.
"Kevin is a fantastic instructor! The combination of technical info, practical, hands-on learning and most importantly a fun and creative learning environment already has me taking better pictures! Being able to see improvements in my images right away is truly inspiring, and is just the kind of boost that is turning my hobby into a true passion for photography. I plan to sign up for more classes in the future and recommend Kevin's courses highly to every other beginner photographer I meet."
"Hands on, collaborative, conceptual and practical at the same time."
"Kevin Gourley is a fantastic instructor!"
"Kevin has so much experience and great tips for every issue you could possibly think of. He doesn't only teach the theory, I could really tell that he actually DOES what he's talking about - these are real tips from a real photographer."
"Kevin's style of teaching is outstanding. He is a very caring person and bends over backwards to make certain he solves any problems you may be having with your equipment or photos. He creates a great learning environment."
"This was such an amazing class! It was so fun to take what we had learned in 101, and Mastering the Fundamentals, and the morning of instruction and put it to work with real models!! It was great hearing your ideas, talking with others in the group, and then experimenting with our own creativity! I felt like a professional photographer! So much fun!"
