What do you love to photograph the most? \u00a0<\/strong>I have\u00a0actually given this question a lot of thought lately.\u00a0\u00a0 That’s because over the years, people have frequently asked me this question, and I\u00a0found myself giving\u00a0different answers each time (depending upon what I had most recently photographed).\u00a0 Now that I’ve given it some thought,\u00a0I realize that my favorite\u00a0images are the ones that involved fun experiences.\u00a0\u00a0To elaborate, my philosophy is that photography has less to do with the final image and more to do about the impact of the art\u00a0itself (travel with family,\u00a0spending time with friends,\u00a0immersion in nature, teaching my kids, noticing beautiful things in the world that are otherwise\u00a0overlooked, escape from reality, showing people how strong \/ powerful \/ attractive they really are –\u00a0I could\u00a0go on but I’ll stop there).\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is one thing you have learned that has improved your photography? <\/strong>\u00a0Short answer:\u00a0 Knowing the Why<\/i>.\u00a0 Long Answer:\u00a0 When I was a newbie, I took an individual photography tour in Paris while I was there for a family trip.\u00a0 The French photographer taught me to study not only other people’s photographs but also paintings; she took me to an art store in Paris and walked around with me.\u00a0 She asked me to point out the pieces I liked, and we discussed what drew me to those pieces in particular.\u00a0\u00a0Some people may have been put out to spend time looking at other people’s art instead of practicing my own photography with this tour guide.\u00a0\u00a0 But, my\u00a0approach to photography changed that day, and the time spent studying other people’s art was ultimately much more valuable than the same amount of time taking my own photos.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Now, I look at other people’s photos\u00a0and other forms of art – I mean I\u00a0really<\/span> <\/i>look<\/i> at them. It’s easy to breeze through images, because\u00a0we are exposed to so many images, especially through social media.\u00a0 However, by being cognizant of what I like and (most importantly)\u00a0why<\/i> I like it often leads my photos to have a reason<\/i> behind it.\u00a0 For example, \u00a0I learned that I enjoy Vermeer, and I try to mimic his\u00a0lighting.\u00a0 \u00a0I have found that my\u00a0most\u00a0successful images have been ones that were purposeful\u00a0based on what\u00a0compositions, color, lighting, and themes that I already know I like.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Advice you\u2019d give to others wanting to grow in their photography skills: \u00a0<\/strong>My advice is to ask for feedback and instruction from experienced photographers like Kevin Gourley.\u00a0 Continue taking classes and never stop learning!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I am including this particular picture because it is an example of “knowing the why”.\u00a0 I planned out the dress, the lighting (in an attempt to mimic Vermeer), the colors, and the composition prior to photographing the image.\u00a0 I even drew\u00a0it out on a scratch pad before the shoot.\u00a0 Because I\u00a0knew what I was going for, the image did not take long to capture, and in my opinion, it worked because I\u00a0knew exactly what and why I wanted it this way.\u00a0\u00a0By the way, I have plenty of images that (in my opinion) didn’t “work”, because I didn’t properly plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
