{"id":438,"date":"2017-03-01T22:44:13","date_gmt":"2017-03-01T22:44:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/?p=438"},"modified":"2017-03-01T22:44:13","modified_gmt":"2017-03-01T22:44:13","slug":"a-matter-of-perspective","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/2017\/03\/01\/a-matter-of-perspective\/","title":{"rendered":"A Matter of Perspective"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Depending on the lenses you own, you can achieve different effects in image perspective through the focal length you choose. \u00a0The lens focal length is measured in millimeters (mm) and on a zoom lens the focal length is adjustable. \u00a0The lower the focal length, the more &#8220;wide angle&#8221; the field of view. \u00a0Higher focal lengths are said to be in the &#8220;telephoto&#8221; range.<\/p>\n<p>One aspect about your choice of focal length that is worthy of mentioning is how your choice affects <em><strong>perspective<\/strong><\/em> and\u00a0compression of depth as you go to the longer focal lengths.<\/p>\n<p>A wide angle lens tends to make the foreground elements look more enlarged and the background appears more distant and smaller. Telephoto lens do just the opposite. \u00a0They tend to make elements in the background appear large. The longer the focal length, the more exaggerated the effect is.<\/p>\n<p>Take, for example, this image shot with\u00a0a very long focal length telephoto lens (400mm). Note how the mountains look enormous! The mountains are big, but the choice of a powerful telephoto lens really emphasizes the majesty of the mountains.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-441\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/perspectiveKG20150710_5826-e1488407097626.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Or in this shot below, taken with a moderately wide angle lens (24mm), the foreground is featured more and the mountains appear more distant and smaller.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-442\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/RMNP_133blackandwhite-e1488407187460.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Focal length is an important consideration with portraits also. \u00a0 A portrait shot with a wide angle lens\u00a0will look different from a shot taken with a telephoto lens. \u00a0Generally speaking most portraits are best done in the 50mm to 150mm range (take into your camera sensor&#8217;s crop factor).<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter love having a variety of focal lengths available to me so I can achieve the effect I desire,\u00a0so I virtually always along\u00a0both wide angle and telephoto lenses in my
