{"id":228,"date":"2016-12-15T21:59:30","date_gmt":"2016-12-15T21:59:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/?p=228"},"modified":"2016-12-16T00:24:21","modified_gmt":"2016-12-16T00:24:21","slug":"chromatic-aberration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/2016\/12\/15\/chromatic-aberration\/","title":{"rendered":"Chromatic Aberration &#8211; Why It Matters!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Adobe Lightroom has a\u00a0nifty little checkbox called &#8216;Remove Chromatic Aberration&#8217;\u00a0in its Develop Module \u00a0in the &#8216;Lens Correction&#8217; section.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-234\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-2016-12-15-at-3.34.31-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"366\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-2016-12-15-at-3.34.31-PM.png 366w, https:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-2016-12-15-at-3.34.31-PM-300x152.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 366px) 100vw, 366px\" \/>Have you ever noticed it? \u00a0Well, if you haven&#8217;t, I encourage you to check it out! \u00a0It fixes a problem common to many lenses called &#8216;Chromatic Aberration&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the\u00a0dictionary definition:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-229\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-2016-12-15-at-3.40.20-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"615\" height=\"136\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-2016-12-15-at-3.40.20-PM.png 615w, https:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-2016-12-15-at-3.40.20-PM-300x66.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 615px) 100vw, 615px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Did you get that? \u00a0If that <em>didn&#8217;t<\/em> make sense, here&#8217;s another way of describing the problem. \u00a0You may notice that with some lenses, you&#8217;ll see some magenta or green fringing of colors on edges. \u00a0It may be more noticeable on some lenses vs\u00a0others. \u00a0And it usually will be more visible\u00a0when you open up the aperture to\u00a0lower f\/stops.<\/p>\n<p>Take for example, this photo I shot in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/kgclass2017RMNP.php\">Rocky Mountain National Park<\/a> on a trail, using my Sigma 15mm Fisheye lens. When you view the whole photo, you may not notice the chromatic aberration, but it is there.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-231\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-2016-12-15-at-3.48.26-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1498\" height=\"997\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-2016-12-15-at-3.48.26-PM.png 1498w, https:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-2016-12-15-at-3.48.26-PM-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-2016-12-15-at-3.48.26-PM-768x511.png 768w, https:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-2016-12-15-at-3.48.26-PM-1024x682.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1498px) 100vw, 1498px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But if you look carefully, in the upper left corner, among\u00a0the Aspen trees, you will see magenta and green fringing along the edges and the middle. It&#8217;s pretty noticeable, <em>really\u00a0bad<\/em> in this case. \u00a0THAT is the effect of chromatic aberration!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-233\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-2016-12-15-at-3.34.15-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1102\" height=\"711\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-2016-12-15-at-3.34.15-PM.png 1102w, https:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-2016-12-15-at-3.34.15-PM-300x194.png 300w, https:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-2016-12-15-at-3.34.15-PM-768x496.png 768w, https:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-2016-12-15-at-3.34.15-PM-1024x661.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1102px) 100vw, 1102px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So imagine you took this image and decided to make a nice large 20&#215;30&#8243; print to hang on your wall. \u00a0Once you get the large \u00a0print, you&#8217;ll REALLY notice the problem.<\/p>\n<p>That is what that &#8216;Remove Chromatic Aberration&#8217;\u00a0checkbox is for in Adobe Lightroom, to attempt to eliminate the annoying magenta or green along edges.
