{"id":52,"date":"2016-11-18T05:27:11","date_gmt":"2016-11-18T05:27:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/?page_id=52"},"modified":"2016-11-24T18:19:26","modified_gmt":"2016-11-24T18:19:26","slug":"photography-just-taking-photo","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/photography-just-taking-photo\/","title":{"rendered":"There is More to Photography Than Just Taking the Photo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u00a0have taught a wide variety of photography workshops over the years and often have heard from photographers who wonder why their photos are not as good as the\u00a0many images they see on the Internet. \u00a0 The answer lies in two areas, and if you disregard either, your photography results will suffer.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>#1 Master your camera skills<\/strong> so you get the best image possible in-camera. That means ensuring it is properly exposed and focused, and that the shutter speed was well chosen. \u00a0Actually there is a long list of things that you have to be aware of, but just know that you will do best to really get to know your camera\u00a0first. Start out by doing the best you possibly can when creating the image. \u00a0BUT, that&#8217;s only part of the challenge&#8230;<\/li>\n<li><strong>#2 Post-Processing:<\/strong> \u00a0Once you have created the photograph, there is usually something you need to do with the image to enhance it. \u00a0That was certainly true back in the days of film. \u00a0How you processed and printed the image in the darkroom was of critical importance to produce the best shot. Ansel Adams most definitely understood this importance. The same is true today, but instead of a darkroom, you use computer software to process our images. \u00a0Programs like Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop can\u00a0and <em>SHOULD<\/em>\u00a0take your image to the next level. You really don&#8217;t want to ignore this part of the process. \u00a0The term often used today is &#8220;post-processing&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an example image, as shot in camera:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-53\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-17-at-11.12.13-PM.png\" alt=\"Unprocessed Image\" width=\"882\" height=\"491\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-17-at-11.12.13-PM.png 882w, https:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-17-at-11.12.13-PM-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-17-at-11.12.13-PM-768x428.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 882px) 100vw, 882px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With Adobe Lightroom, I just did a few quick edits to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increase the brightness just a little bit with the &#8220;exposure&#8221; setting<\/li>\n<li>Darkened down the highlights slightly<\/li>\n<li>Lightened up the shadows a bit<\/li>\n<li>Increase the saturation a little bit<\/li>\n<li>Increased the &#8220;clarity&#8221; a little bit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And here is the result after about one minute of editing:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-17-at-11.15.19-PM.png\" alt=\"After Editing\" width=\"882\" height=\"498\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-17-at-11.15.19-PM.png 882w, https:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-17-at-11.15.19-PM-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-17-at-11.15.19-PM-768x434.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 882px) 100vw, 882px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Also, some photographs might be better converted to black and white. \u00a0Try that out and see which you like best.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-17-at-11.16.50-PM.png\" alt=\"Black &amp; White Option\" width=\"882\" height=\"479\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-17-at-11.16.50-PM.png 882w, https:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-17-at-11.16.50-PM-300x163.png 300w, https:\/\/www.kgphotoworkshops.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-17-at-11.16.50-PM-768x417.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 882px) 100vw, 882px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The bottom line is that you really should learn how to edit and enhance your photos.\u00a0Photography in the digital age is a mix of camera skills and software skills. \u00a0Both are necessary. \u00a0It&#8217;s really a lot of fun.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and one other thing&#8230;
